 BCLTA at 40: Our Stories and Our Libraries

This year's BCLTA conference will be held on Friday, April 21st and Saturday, April 22nd at the Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront, 1133 West Hastings Street in Vancouver following the BC Library Association's conference, April 19th to the 21st.

BCLTA conference registration will be open February 4th through to March 28th 2017.

The BCLTA is grateful for the support of the Vancouver Public Library for hosting April 21st session of Chairing the Board and for Colleen Chambers for hosting the April 21st TOP session at the TSX.  The Libraries Branch, Ministry of Education, have generously provided financial support for this 2 day learning and networking opportunity for BC public library trustees.

BCLTA Conference Program

Friday, April 21st  


9:00 am - 4:00 pm     Trustee Orientation Program (TOP)

TOP is a comprehensive look at the roles and responsibilities of library trustees in British Columbia. Participants are introduced to the provincial context for public library leadership, including legislation and services, community advocacy, current issues and strategies for success.  Led by experienced trainer, Colleen Chamber. The training is intended for new trustees, but has proven to be a valuable refresher for those more experienced as well.

1:00 pm - 4:00 pm     The Critical Role of the Board Chair

Strong Leadership is about more than running efficient meetings.   Learn key strategies to engage your board trustees as a high-performing team. You will understand the critical role the board chair plays, explore how to move your board into generative and strategic discussions, and create ideas for a Board Chair leadership action plan.

Participants will learn context and gain skills to lead the board in four core areas:

    - Developing the board itself
    - Developing the Executive Director 
    - Developing the organization’s capacity for relevant conversations
    - Developing strong external relationships

Our trainer is Vantage Point Executive Director Denise Baker, formerly Director of Worldwide Education at Business Objects and Assistant Dean at the Sauder School of Business at UBC.

11:30 am - 12:30 pm    Tour of Vancouver Public Library's Inspiration Lab

Vancouver Public Library has kindly offered to provide BCLTA conference delegates a tour of the Inspiration Lab. This is a wonderful opportunity for trustees and library directors.

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm    Vancouver Art Gallery

We have a arranged for conference delegates, trustees and library directors to have a special tour of the VAG with a look "behind the scenes" and a tour of the Susan Point: Spindle Whorl exhibition.

BCLTA 40th Anniversary Reception and Annual Awards Ceremony


Reception: 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Conference Registration: 6:45 pm  - 7:30 pm

Cost:          Included in conference price ($150) and we need your registration for catering purposes.

We are launching our 2017 Conference, BCLTA at 40: Our Stories and Our Libraries with an evening filled with the enjoyment of connecting with our library friends and colleagues. 

The evening will include welcoming remarks from invited dignitaries, Trustee Awards, a special 40th anniversary “Reflect and Project” pop-up art-happening, and time to socialize. Lots to celebrate and even more to look forward to!

And as this is a celebration of BCLTA’s 40th anniversary we encourage you to wear something ruby red and enter to win a prize!

This evening’s award ceremony will recognize outstanding volunteer leaders in the library community.  Nominations are open until March 21st . Please see award and nomination information here

This moderated panel discussion will include time for Q&A with the conference delegates.

Lisa will be presenting her research regarding public libraries and public spaces in the context of austerity and municipal governance.

Trustees will share their inspiring, funny, heart wrenching, and instructive stories. And they will be doing this in less than 3 minutes!

As we end our day together, we will be joined by the NewToBC Library Champions who will share their experiences of libraries through the lens of being newcomers, patrons, and strong community advocates. Their stories resonate throughout BC and make a difference to how we think about the future of libraries and the communities we serve.
