BCLTA AGM 2023

The BCLTA Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the 2023 AGM will be held on May 29th, via Zoom starting at 6:30PM Pacific Time.

The BCLTA is calling an AGM at this time to:

  • Move the AGM back to a spring schedule. The AGM moved to the fall in 2020 due to pandemic disruptions and moving it back to a spring schedule will allow for future AGMS to take place during spring library conferences.
  • Connect with members and share association business updates such as work on the BCLTA policy manual, staff restructuring and recruitment, the 2023 budget, and strengthening the impact of the association with and for the membership in collaboration with our partners and the Public Libraries Branch.
  • Recognize outstanding members with the Nancy Bennett Governance Merit Award and the BCLTA Trustee Excellence Award.
  • Invite members to join the board! See below for more information and link to the nomination form.

Special Guest

Mari Martin, Director of the Public Libraries Branch (PLB), Ministry of Municipal Affairs, will be joining us in conversation about the work of the PLB in supporting BC public library boards and library directors and her hopes and goals for public library governance. 

After our time with Mari Martin, we will convene the AGM and move into the business of the agenda.

  • Member boards, represented by their trustee delegate(s), are able to vote
  • BCLTA welcomes all BC public library trustees and library directors to attend the AGM

  • Confirming who will be voting on behalf of your board
  • Any accessibility requirements such as ASL interpretation

All members are invited to participate in the AGM and library directors are welcome to attend as guests. Each attendee is required to register. To register email Babs Kelly (babs.kelly@bclta.ca) with:

  • your name
  • the name of your BC public library board
  • your role (trustee, board chair, or library director)

BCLTA 2023 AGM Key Dates

April 6th

  • Begin receiving nominations.
  • More information on being nominated to the BCLTA Board below.
  • Any trustee in good standing with a BC public library board, and where that board is in good standing with BCLTA, may be nominated. 
  • Please use the 2023 BCLTA Board of Directors Nomination Form. 
  • Nominations close end of day, May 15th.
  • The 2023 Nomination Committee members are BCLTA Board Directors Darius Maze and Jennifer Amell.

April 14th

  • Special resolutions are to be received by April 14th, 2023. Send special resolutions to Babs Kelly, Attn: BCLTA Resolutions Committee. 

May 5th

  • Award Nominations close.

May 15th

  • Final day to submit nominations for election to the BCLTA Board.
  • Any BC public library trustee may be nominated. 

May 16th

  • Board Nomination Committee reviews nominee forms. 
  • Once reviewed, names of nominees posted to the 2023 AGM Package (see above)

May 29th

  • The AGM will begin at 6:30PM (PT) via Zoom.

Nominate or be Nominated for the BCLTA Board of Directors!

The BCLTA Board is comprised of 3 to 9 Directors. The BCLTA Board holds its first meeting immediately, or as soon as possible, after the AGM to elect a Board President, Vice-President, and Treasurer.  Director terms of office are 2 years.

There are 5 Director positions for election at the 2023 AGM.

Why BCLTA?

  • We are the professional association for BC public library trustees and boards. We support effective governance and represent public library boards to the provincial government, to our partners, and to other relevant organizations.
  • We oversee an association with solid membership support, skilled and committed staff, and strong partnerships.
  • We are effective. 2022 was a successful year in implementing our Strategic Framework to 2025 and we are on track for accomplishing even more for our membership in upcoming years. See our Strategic Framework to 2025 and our Convictions.
  • This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your community leadership and governance skills as well as the reputation and impact of your library.  Be part of establishing the strategic direction and providing oversight for a provincial association that:
    • Supports effective public library governance province-wide.
    • Works with the Public Library Partners (ABCPLD, BCLA, and BCLC) and other organizations on initiatives such as conferences, ministry meetings, the UBCM trade show, and advocacy campaigns.
    • Works collaboratively with the BC Public Library Federations to support the learning and development needs of trustees. 
    • Initiates and contributes to provincial initiatives in coordination with the Public Libraries Branch which is responsible for the oversight of the Library Act, while BCLTA is uniquely responsible for representing and supporting boards established by the Library Act.

Do you, or a trustee you know, have what BCLTA needs?

You must have a commitment to BCLTA and the membership we serve.

This means you are:

  • Knowledgeable and positive about the mandate, work, and potential of BCLTA.
  • Committed to attending and fully participating in BCLTA Board meetings (4-6 times per year) and to supporting the work of BCLTA.
  • Prepared to represent BCLTA and our membership in building relationships within the library sector and with provincial government and other agencies such as the Union of BC Municipalities.
  • Friendly and will jump at the chance to network and pro-actively represent BCLTA at meetings, conferences and other events.

Resolutions received will be posted by May 5th. 

Special resolutions are to be received by April 14th. Please send resolutions to Babs Kelly, Attn: BCLTA Resolutions Committee.
